His transformation went beyond weight loss — improving his joint health, mental well-being, and overall metabolic health. And he’s not stopping there.

When we talk about weight loss for men, the conversation usually stops at the scale. The number goes down, and we assume the job is done.
But this Men’s Health Month, it’s time to rethink the narrative. True wellness goes beyond the scale — it’s rooted in whole-body health, with metabolic health as the foundation, and weight loss as the catalyst for meaningful change.
This month, we're featuring a story that brings that shift to life. Larry H’s journey through OPTAVIA’s pilot program shows what happens when you find a comprehensive approach that combines science, personalized support, and biobehavioral shifts.
Keep reading to follow his transformation.
He Had Lost Weight Before, but Something Was Missing
Larry knew what it was like to lose weight. Seven years ago, he lost a significant amount of weight, but life threw him curveballs.
After a few surgeries, the weight started creeping back on. He realized he was missing a deeper “why” and a true sense of identity.
“I didn’t know how to be me,” Larry says. “Because I didn’t understand what me was.” He started going to therapy to figure things out and do the necessary mental work.
With a clear vision from therapy, he was ready to tackle his physical health again. Just as he was having a hard time sticking to his goals, OPTAVIA’s 3.0 pilot program popped up. The timing couldn’t have been better.
What started as another attempt to take control of his health became something more — a turning point that would impact not just his body, but his mindset and overall well-being.
What is OPTAVIA's pilot program?
OPTAVIA is continuously evolving with the latest science. In a recent review of our clinical research, our scientists found that our flagship Optimal Weight 5 & 1 Plan® does more than support weight loss. It delivers a strong and targeted fat burn — reducing visceral fat, preserving lean mass, and protecting healthy muscle — key factors in improving metabolic health.**
Building on these insights, we're in the process of developing a next-generation approach designed to support metabolic health — working with your body at a deeper level.
Our 3.0 pilot program brought this evolution to life — featuring a new line of products (coming soon) as part of the 5 & 1 nutrition meal plan, alongside personalized coach support and the Habits of Health® Transformational System.
Participants followed the program for 12 weeks using these newly developed products as part of the 5 & 1 nutrition meal plan — and the insights and stories that emerged are both powerful and inspiring. Stay tuned.
Before: Exhausted, Uncomfortable, and Out of Sync
Before starting the pilot, Larry’s daily reality was tough. He struggled with low energy, fatigue, and constant joint pain in his back, knees, ankles, and feet.
“By the end of the day, my body was just done,” he recalled. His physical limitations were holding him back from the life he wanted.
When his son asked him to go on a hike, Larry had to say no. He knew his body simply couldn’t handle it.
Larry also faced significant problems sleeping. Night after night, he found it hard to stay comfortable or get the restful sleep his body desperately needed. “I’d wake up feeling just as tired as when I went to bed,” he shared. This constant exhaustion made it even more difficult for him to tackle his daily challenges.
His body was screaming at him that it was out of sync and needed a reset.
A Different Approach to Healthy, Quality Weight Loss
When Larry joined the pilot program, he learned something that reframed everything: more than 90% of U.S. adults are living with metabolic dysfunction† — often showing up as excess weight, brain fog, and low energy.
For the first time, he saw himself in that picture — and realized this journey needed to be different.
Unlike his first attempt, Larry approached this health journey differently. This time, it wasn’t just about losing weight — it was about losing the right kind of weight. To do that, he needed to start with nutrition but continue to hone in on healthy habits. He learned that everything is connected. Nutrition, movement, sleep, and stress all play a role, and weight loss would never last without addressing all areas.

With a structured plan rooted in high-quality protein, carb-controlled, nutrient-optimized foods, Lean & Green meals, sustainable habit change, and real human coach support, he started to shift more than the number on the scale — he changed what that number actually reflected.
Instead of simply losing weight, Larry focused on improving his body composition, reducing body fat, while retaining lean mass and protecting healthy muscle.**
This supported his metabolic health — helping improve his energy, recovery, and day-to-day function.

Experiencing a 12-Week Transformation
The results speak for themselves. In just 12 weeks, Larry lost 30.4 pounds.* But beyond the number on the scale were the meaningful shifts in his body composition.
These results are based on Larry’s own tracking using a smart scale, comparing where he started to where he was at week 12.
He experienced:
✔ 6.8% fat mass loss
✔ Reduced visceral fat
✔ Lowered BMI from 40 to 35.6
✔ Overall improvement in body composition and metabolic health outcomes (e.g. joint health)

Celebrating Non-Scale Victories
The changes went far beyond physical. Larry’s endurance and mobility underwent a complete transformation.
Just three months ago, even a short walk left him exhausted. Now, he has energy that carries him through his day. Recently, he spent hours weeding his father-in-laws pasture — something he wouldn’t have imagined before — and didn’t tire.
He’s back to doing what matters most. Hiking with his son. Moving with confidence. Showing up fully.

And in a moment that says it all, he carried a 140-pound elk a mile off the mountain — a true testament to the strength he’s built and the health he’s regained.
“This journey has been about so much more than just losing weight. It’s about gaining a new lease on life — one where I feel strong, capable, and ready to take on anything.” — Larry
Better Sleep. Clearer Mind. Real Resilience
Alongside the physical changes, something else shifted — Larry’s mental well-being.
Before, he’d sleep poorly, wakeup exhausted, and repeat the cycle.
Now, sleep feels different. “When I wake up, I feel rested,” he says.
Through his coach’s support, habit-building, and therapy, Larry began to recognize emotional triggers — and respond to them differently. That awareness gave him the chance to pause, reset, and avoid turning to emotional eating.

During the pilot, he also lost multiple loved ones — facing deep emotional stress and moments that could have completely derailed his progress. Instead, he leaned on the support of his coach and the techniques he was learning to help him stay grounded and keep moving forward because this time, his approach to health included both his body and his mind.
And as his physical health improved, so did his mental resilience — each strengthening the other.
“This isn’t a temporary opportunity,” he says. “This is something I can keep going with. I’ve found my ‘why’ — and what I need to live well.”
Leaning on a Coach and Community
Larry's clear about one thing: he didn’t do this alone. “I don’t think I could have done this journey without a coach,” he says.
For him, that support went far beyond food or structure. “Sometimes all you need is that call — to hear the phone ring. To know someone’s there.”
During some of his hardest moments, that connection mattered most. “Having a coach had nothing to do with what I was eating. It was knowing I had someone there who cared — someone I could lean on.”

He also leaned into community in a new way, sharing his journey openly and honestly. “I’ve turned my Facebook into my support page. My place where I live out loud, unapologetically.”
"You can have the best plan in the world, but it's the support around you that helps you stay with it. It's in the hard days and unexpected setbacks where having someone in your corner makes all the difference." –Madelyn Shepard, MPH, CHES, Senior Health and Nutrition Education. For Larry, that support didn’t just help — it amplified everything.
Did you know?
People tend to do better with a coach. Human connection is our superpower. Clients can lose up to 10x more weight and 17x more fat when they have a coach by their side.‡
What's Next: Building Strength and Living Freely
Larry’s focus now isn’t on a number — it’s on what his body can do.
He’s continuing to build strength, support his metabolic health, and lean into the freedom he’s gained — more energy, more capability, and more confidence in how he shows up every day.
“I want to impress me,” he says.

As he moves forward, he plans to shift from resetting his health to refining and renewing it, with a focus on building muscle and improving his body composition while continuing to strengthen both his body and mindset.
Embracing the Bigger Picture
Larry’s story reflects something bigger than one transformation.
It reflects a shift.
Away from quick fixes.
Away from scale-only success.
And toward something more complete:
Improved metabolic health — supporting how the body uses energy, regulates hunger, and functions day to day
Social connection — staying connected to a coach and community that provide guidance, accountability, and encouragement
Mental well-being — building resilience, reducing stress, and creating a clearer, more focused mindset
Sustainable habits — developing consistent, repeatable behaviors that make healthy living feel automatic
Because when those pieces come together, health becomes something more.
It becomes something ingrained — part of how you live, not something you chase.
Larry’s story is a reminder that real change doesn’t come from chasing a number — it comes from building a system that works for your body and your life.

If you’re ready to move beyond the scale and take a more complete approach to your health, our comprehensive metabolic health system — rooted in science, guided by a coach, and built on sustainable habits — can help you get there.
Because when your metabolism is supported, your energy improves, your body responds differently, and your results are built to last.
And like Larry, you may find it’s not just about losing weight — it’s about gaining your life back.
